Hello there Lab members!
We are thrilled to kick off this week with a new design tutorial from Chelsea! In this tutorial Chelsea shares one technique for creating abstract florals. Feel free to use this technique in this month’s design challenge, “Recycle.” You’ll find links to all these posts below.
Please let us know if you have any questions and we can’t wait to see what you create this week!
In this new video tutorial Chelsea walks you step by step through the process of creating a loose, painterly abstract floral with gold accents. She’ll show you how to combine hand-painted motifs with digital painting effects to achieve an end result like the one you see in the image on the left.
If you are struggling to get started with this month’s design challenge try creating an abstract floral using Chelsea’s technique and then apply the “Recycled” theme to your final collection.
Chelsea’s Challenge: Recycle
This month’s theme is all about recycling–reworking old prints or creating patterns to be pieced together and used in unexpected ways. We provide two different directions for you to take, but there are so many different ways to run with this theme. This is a fun opportunity to create something new, or use that pattern that was too difficult to put into repeat or that you could never figure out the right layout.
This month let’s come together as a group and design for the children’s market. We have provided two playful color palettes, though as always, these are provided as a jumping off point and it is not required that you use them.
New Guest Expert Training: How to Find New Clients (and Get More Work) by Sew Heidi
We are excited to welcome guest expert Sew Heidi back to the Lab for an informative 24 minute training video on finding new clients and getting more work, something most of us are always looking for.
In this video, Heidi covers:
- 4 places (you never thought of) to find new clients
- what to say if you meet someone at an industry event or mixer (so you can follow up later to ask for work)
- word for word email scripts you can customize to reach out to brands (even if they don’t know you)
Weekly Art Critique Please join Michelle for our live art critique held THURSDAY at 1 PM Eastern. This is a fun event where Lab members come together to review artwork and ask questions about pattern design, marketing and sales.
